Oh My! Cinco de Mayo Cocktails

We often like to travel south to craft exciting flavor profiles for our recipes, and for cocktails. This Cinco de Mayo, we’ve mixed up some libations to put a little “¡olé!” in your day.

Our Cinco de Mayo cocktails also have a succulent twist: prickly pears.

Prickly pears are the pink fruits of the nopal cactus. They have a subtle, sweet flavor reminiscent of watermelon. Some say prickly pear juice is the perfect hangover cure. We’re not so sure about that, but we do know it’ll make the journey to that hangover a lot tastier.

Tinto de Nopal

Walt, our resident mixologist and the mastermind behind these cocktails, says: “I learned how to make sangria from one of my best friends while working at a tequila and empanada bar. My simplified version marries tinto de verano with luscious sangria, perfect for this year’s festivities.” This bold drink balances robust red wine with fresh, bright strawberries—just the thing to cool down and wind down after dinner.

Single serving

5 ounces red wine (Spanish wine recommended)
5 ounces San Pellegrino Prickly Pear & Orange sparkling fruit beverage
1.5 ounces rum (fruit flavor if preferred)
2 dashes orange bitters
sliced organic strawberries for garnish
large cylindrical ice cube (optional, but mixologist-recommended for the perfect chill)

  1. Add ice to your favorite rocks, highball, or stemless wine glass.
  2. Top with 2 dashes of orange bitters.
  3. Finish with rum, red wine, then San Pellegrino.
  4. Add sliced strawberries and stir gently.
  5. Garnish with a strawberry on the rim.

The Thought Process

Walt won’t reveal the inside joke behind the name, but he will let you in on a little secret: This cocktail is especially beautiful right after you finish the float (so be ready for that Instagrammable moment). Our fresh take on a traditional margarita is citrusy, sparkling, and delightful.

Single serving

1 ounce fresh organic lime juice
1 ounce fresh organic orange juice
1 ounce fresh organic lemon juice
1.5 ounces silver or gold tequila
1 can (11.15 fl oz) San Pellegrino Prickly Pear & Orange sparkling fruit beverage (substitute with pulp or puree for a richer, bolder cocktail)
salt or sugar for garnish

  1. Rim your favorite glass with salt or sugar.
  2. Add lemon, lime, and orange juices to a cocktail shaker with ice.
  3. Add tequila to cocktail shaker.
  4. Shake to combine.
  5. Pour mixture into glass.
  6. Float margarita with San Pellegrino Prickly Pear & Orange beverage.
