If you’re gluten-free, you’ve seen this situation time and time again. You walk into a family party, a get-together with friends, or even one of your favorite restaurants and it hits you… There is nothing you can eat. Foods are full of gluten and finding something that fits your dietary needs can be challenging, especially during BBQ season. We’ve been there too, so this 4th of July we want to help you survive this All-American celebration by giving you tips and tricks for staying gluten-free at a gluten-full festivity.
- Serve a Side Dish
If you are nervous about the possibility of gluten hiding in the traditional baked beans or even the salad dressings, bring a dish you can share with everyone. This way, you’ll know you have a recipe you can eat, and you can introduce people to something they’ve never had before.
- Bring Your Own Meat
Since BBQ meats generally involve a marinade or sauce. If you bring your own meat, you can make sure to avoid any unwanted additives, and control what goes into your sauce or marinade. If you really want to get creative, you can make kebabs with your favorite veggies and meat. They grill up quickly, and there will be plenty left over to share.
- Boycott the Bun
Avoiding the bun is one easy way to steer clear of gluten. Wrap your hotdog or hamburger with lettuce instead!
- Stock Up on Snacks
If you don’t want to go to the trouble of bringing a dish and you can’t find a way to avoid gluten, bring snacks. Ensure you have enough to keep you full during the duration of the party.
- Peruse the Packaging
Don’t be afraid to ask the host to read the packaging labels. Gluten can be hiding in a lot of foods, so it is always good to double check ingredients, even if it says gluten-free. That way you know exactly what is in your meal, and you won’t make the mistake of grabbing a bun that claims to be gluten-free even if it’s not. Most hosts won’t mind, and it will put your mind at ease.
